Steuben County Surrogate Court Judge candidate Chauncey Watches released a statement Wednesday announcing that he is suspending his campaign. In the primary election, Watches won on the Conservative and Independence tickets, but lost the Republican ballot to Patrick McAllister. In his statement, Watches said he “reviewed the numbers in detail,… and given the history of elections in Steuben County” could not see a path to victory without appearing on the Republican line. He will still appear on the November ballot, but he will no longer be actively campaigning. As a sitting judge, Watches said he’s not allowed to endorse any other candidates, but he did say he’s known McAllister as a friend for a long time, and he wishes him well.
