I have taught college for 20 years and have substituted in the public schools for 7 years. I have observed in elementary, middle, high school and college that it does not do any good to threaten a student with a failing grade. If they do not want to work they will not. I believe, through experience, that the only way to get the student to work is through positive reinforcement. This article is proof of that. I have also team taught with other teachers who use such statements as, "this table is really working hard," and it really works.

  • Parents receive clear guidelines spelling out their role.
  • Teachers do not expect parents to act as experts regarding content or to attempt to teach the content.
  • Parents ask questions that help students clarify and summarize what they have learned.
