That year, I had one of the highest EOC proficiency rates in our school…the next year, I had the highest overall. My transition wasn’t a distraction, it didn’t cause an uproar, and I didn’t lose respect among peers. In fact, two years after transitioning, I was voted 2014 Teacher of the Year and shortly after promoted to Assistant Principal. Not all transgender individuals experience this kind of support, but times are changing. Twenty years ago, I would have probably lost my job. I hope to positively impact those around me, so that when students, parents, and coworkers encounter other transgender individuals, they treat them with respect.
